Reading the thread on locomotive caused fires raises a question: What practices will C&TS implement in order to prevent future fires that will threaten structures?
We have all seen what a deck fire can do to a large and valuable iron bridge. Cascade Trestle would be another candidate for a costly fire loss on par with Lobato. How many timber trestles are there on that line? I suppose there are some that could be replaced without undue financial burden. But are there other trestles that are flammable and large enough to be a significant financial burden to replace if they were to burn? If so, how many?
Somewhere I read that the last train over Lobato started six fires that personnel extinguished that day. Apparently they missed fire number seven. Considering that costly learning experience, will they redouble their efforts to patrol for fires set by locomotives? Certainly they do not intend to re-deck Lobato with flammable timber ties, do they?
