Kerosene Can Question

A friend has just purchased a kerosene can which was used on the D&RGW. It is a flat bottom, round top gallon can with a spout that has a screw on cap and a large filling hole with cap in the center of the top, both chained to the bail. It has a stainless steel badge riveted to one side marked D&RGW.
Does anyone know what color this can should be? It has been painted a dark blue but we don't think the paint is original as the quality was very poor. Anyone know what color they were painted in service or if they were painted at all? There is no indication of what the contents stamped or raised anywhere on the can so it may have been color coded for kerosene but we want to be sure before repairing the paint job or removing it.
