D&RGW 223 lettering

In response to Fritz's post about D&RGW stencils and the 223, here is the story behind the lettering on the tender, from Jerry Day's article:

Pre-1941: 1930's "Royal Gorge/Moffat Tunnel" scheme

Spring 1941: Repainted in an "1880's" paint scheme at he Salida shops in preparation for donation.

Summer 1952: Salt Lake City shop employees repaint the 223 in its 1930's scheme on their own time.

A close-up of the original button herald shows that it is solid, with no sign of the stencil frets, while the 1950's version does.
