White Pass #80 Looking Fine

This is scanned from a print in the SVRR Archive Christensen Collection. Here we see White Pass & Yukon Route #80. #80 was originally built for the Sumpter Valley Ry. in Oregon as their #20. She was sold to the White Pass in early 1941. At the time of the this photo, we can spot a few things that have been changed since her days on the SVRy hauling lumber trains. During her years on the SVRy she had a simple number plate with a painted #20 and here we see that the WP&Y has had a brass #80 number plate cast. Gone is the Rushton spark arresting stack and the dynamo has been moved from in front of the stack to behind. The White Pass has her dressed up with white tires and running board sides which she never sported in Oregon. In Oregon she was primarily a wood burner, but we see here that tall side boards have been added to the coal space in the tender. One odd note is that the back up sander line has been removed. At some point later on in her career at the WP&Y, the two air pumps were replaced by a single cross compound and she was converted to oil. She looks like she had had a fresh paint job, so perhaps this photo was taken when she first entered service on the WP&Y. #80 survives today back in Oregon at SVRR quietly resting behind the back shop. Hopefully someday she will be restored. Does anyone know what the small plate is above the builders plate?
