October 2and 3 are always a special dates for me. Some October 2-3s may be just regular days, but I can't say that for these dates 55 years ago - two memorable days to be lucky enough to be in narrow gauge country. I am going to post the initial photos of those days with the caveat that some of these scenes have been posted on the NGDF before.
Having been alerted by Ernie Robart of the upcoming freight movement, I took a break from my masters thesis work and headed from NMSU to Alamosa on October 1, 1967. On the morning of October 2, 498 and 493 headed to the south yard to pick up a tonnage freight for Farmington.
498 and 493 are getting a roll on their train, leaving Alamosa
The train was moving right along, barreling down the 3-rail raceway at a good 25 mph
But not for long. Waiting closer to La Jara for the train to come rushing past - the train slowed and stopped just before reaching my middle of nowhere spot.
Some crew members got off the engines and walked back to check out some problem, while I took the opportunity to get some head-on shots on the 3-rail track
(to be continued)
