This is a pair of shots taken at the Montgomery Pass tunnel. The "Then" shot was supposedly taken in 1881 and can be found in Beebe & Clegg's Steamcars to the Comstock as well as SP NG by Ferrell. The "Now" photo was taken on June 19, 2010. It is amazing to see some of the same Juniper and Pinyon Pines are present.
When I first visited this locality in 1984 it was possible to walk through the tunnel. The upper end has now collapsed and it is only possible to enter the lower end. In addition, the cuts on the right of way leading up to the lower end of the tunnel are contnually filling with rocks and debris. It is only a matter of time before it is only accesible by foot.
