Snow Bound on the White Pass

September 24, 2022 03:19PM avatar
This shot was taken by Sergeant Guy Latham on the White Pass & Yukon during World War 2. The US Army operated the railroad due to its strategic importance and continued to operate it during the dead of winter when operations often ceased under civilian operation. This shot illustrates the difficulties that faced sometimes dealing with snow bound trains. The tool car in the photo is not identified, but it is one of three cars from the Sumpter Valley Ry. that the army used for this purpose. The scan is from the SVRR Archive.
