Here a photo that begs a little yard tour of the Sumpter Valley Ry. South Baker yard circa 1920's. The photographer is looking geographically south and timetable west. We have water tank on the far left with the mainline in front of it. The distant large building with clerestory is the machine shop. The odd shaped building with a flat car in one stall and gondola in the other is the car shop. A new car shot was built onto the west side of the machine shop around 1940, the old car shop was then demolished and the 3 stall engine house for #250, #251 and #17 built on the site. The engine house is still standing as part of a auto wrecking yard. The tall smoke stack in the back ground are at the East Oregon Light and Power steam plant. The plant burned wood waste from the mills which was delivered by the SVRy. Moving further right, the building with the gable end was the railroad's stores warehouse. This building is still with us in the wrecking yard. The nearer sheds were steel storage and on the extreme right edge of the shot we can see the corner of the round house. The scan is from the SVRR Archive.
