Freight on the Narrow Gauge of Denver & Rio Grande Western
by Russell Sharp
The Denver & Rio Grande was one of the first narrow gauge railroads in the United States, and among its very last. At its peak, it operated 1861 miles of narrow gauge trackage in Colorado, Utah, and New Mexico, but by the mid 1960s, it was down to less than 300 miles. Photographer Russell Sharp explored the end of narrow gauge common carrier freight operation 1967 and 1968, steam powered till the very end. We'll see the Alamosa to Durango route, with branches to Silverton and Farmington. The eastern end of the route, Alamosa to Antonito, was dual gauge, and the yard at Alamosa was dual gauge.
Come join us for the gorgeous Colorado mountain scenery.
Railroad & Shortlines Club of Chicago meets at Chicago Union Station on the third Friday of the month except in July and August.
