This is a favorite view of the Sumpter Valley Ry. in operation in the 1940's. We see 2-6-6-2 #250 east bound with what I think is 11 loads and caboose #5. The location is Styx also often called Alder Springs trestle. The grade at the trestle is 2.2%, but soon the train will encounter grades up to 3.4% before reaching the summit at Larch. It was typical even with the big simple articulated engines to double the grades, so this is likely about half of the train with the first half already waiting at Larch.
