Sumpter Valley Log Train 1897

Our SVRR Archive received this photo along with others from a descendant of Sumpter Valley Ry engineer Melvin Huthins. The photo is dated 1897 and in it we see Brooks mogul #2 with 30 cars of logs coming out of Boulder Gorge just above Thompson. The photo with caption appears in "Rails Sagebrush and Pine" by Mal Ferrell on page 22. Note the two prominent dead trees in the foreground which appear to have their trunks charred. Perhaps lightning or an errant spark from a wood fired engine set a track side fire.
