If trestle need rebuild, build new curved trestle up stream!

July 01, 2010 04:18PM
Build the first Curved trestle on the C&TS just to the up-stream side and leave the former trestle there, saving the cost of removal. Leave in place such as the bridges on the D&S and the WP&Y (Dead Horse Gulch).

The railroad has right to use any land needed by Railroad Law and it charter. The entire new Veta Pass standard gauge line was built using the charter law, as a second track over the pass. That was regardless of the distance from the first track. Years later after the ng line was abandoned, the D&RG claimed they still owned the right of way when they rebuilt part of the old line to reach the new coal mine west of La Veta. The land owner suit described the entire event, as the track was built even after an injunction, but the RR paid small damages for land use as final close out of suit.

I expect it could look like the curved trestle that was built on branch to serve the Somerset Power plant near Lockport, NY made from surplus oil line pipe. It was very modern and plain looking but cheap and quick to build in 1984 as the Gulf Bridge by designer Bechtel Civil & Mineral, and general contractor Cives Steel Co. It won the prize for the best of the 1980s bridges.

Too bad it couldn’t model a West Side Lumber trestle or the Rock Creek trestle of the New Mexico Lumber Company just north of Dolores, Colorado, the second largest trestle in Southwest Colorado. See page 253 to 263 of RGS Story Volume VII, story by W. George Cook and plan by Jim Key, published by Sundance Ltd. and out of print.

Go to Bird Eye view after putting in West Jackson Street, Lockport, NY in this Bing.com aerial photo and move to left (west) till you reach the trestle.
