In 1979 my brother JR had a chance to hang out in a 2-6-2+2-6-2 NGG-16 2-foot gauge garrat. The engine was bringing a load of pulp logs downgrade west of Highflats on the Umzinto - Donnybrook line in Natal. The swinging fireman's seat provided a great opportunity for hanging out as the train wound around the many curves descending the escarpment.
The train has already descended from the timber-and- grazing Highlands country to the sugar cane fields approaching the Indian Ocean coast. I could only pace the train enviously, as I had to drive our Durban rental car. BTW that Inca wool hat is one he bought while chasing steam in Peru on his way to South Africa.
