Rio Grande Flanger Operations

June 23, 2010 11:52AM avatar
So I have been day dreaming alot lately of my future HOn3 layout and therefore the DRGW and have a question about flanger operation on the Rio Grande. I know that the passenger trains really helped keep the snow at bay cause they were able to buck drifts better than freight trains but were flangers ever carried on them to help cut down on show between the rails? I know the flanger would need to have steam lines then to be placed in a passenger consist and I don't think any every had them but wouldn't that make sense?

Also, was it common practice for the Rio Grande to send flanger extras out with one or two engines? I have seen pictures of both of course, just wondering what was the more common practice.

Thanks!
