Jeff Ellingson, the director of the Durango & Silverton roundhouse museum, a good friend, and great artist is doing a painting that will be the cover of my new K-28 book. It is almost complete. It will be a wrap around cover with half on the front and other half on the rear. The painting will also be included inside the book in the Crested Butte section. It shows two K-28 locomotives at Crested Butte, Colorado in the late 1930s. Number 474 was the regular Crested Butte branch power (and my favorite engine). Number 479 was the regular power on the Shavano passenger train that ran from Salida to Gunnison over Marshall Pass. The Shavano had a long layover at Gunnison waiting for the bus to come from Montrose. The D&RGW often used the Shavano locomotive as a mid-train helper to Crested Butte. Jeff's painting shows the two locomotives on the wye while the crews are having lunch.
The book will have four of Jeff's paintings, beautiful work Jeff.
