After all the discussion following the posting of Olaf's photos of double heading on the Silverton, thought a bit of history might be interesting to some.

Bridge 452.A, Animas River Bridge in Durango.
Board of Director's Meeting, July 25, 1916
Authorities for Expenditures:

Between Romeo and Antonito: Removal of 125 ft iron span, and erection of 110 ft steel span to be removed from bridge 205-B, First Division at Bridge 278-D Fourth Division. The present span is too light, and is needed on Silverton narrow gauge line. The 110 ft span is to be released from Bridge 205-B on account of the 2-10-2 engines. Total cost $4.638,00; chargeable to Expenses $3,962.00; chargeable to Road & Equipment; $676,00.

AFE 3251. 1927. Replace Howe Truss span on the south end of Bridge 452.A with 64 foot steel girder span from Pleasant Valley Branch Utah.

Bridge 4960-A, Cement Creek Silverton
Board of Director's Meeting, July 25, 1916
Authorities for Expenditures:

Hercules: Erection of 64 ft second-hand through girder in place of 64 ft frame span at Bridge 496-A, Silverton Branch. Second-hand 64 ft through girder formerly located at F&CC railway at Canon City. The present frame span and approaches are worn out and must be replaced. Total cost $2,567,00; Chargeable to expenses $1.988,00; chargeable to Road & Equipment; $579,00.

Bridge 471.23, the High Bridge
In 1963, the D&RGW considered rebuilding bridge 471.23 (the High Bridge south of Tacoma) by adding a second hand 185 steel truss bridge on top of the existing bridge. This would have permitted double heading. No information as to why the project was cancelled.
