I am sorry to report that Dr. Stan Rhine passed away this morning after a fall on Friday. According to his wife, he had expressed that he didn't wish to have a funeral or service and none is planned.
Many of you know him as a long-time member of the Rocky Mountain Railroad Club and as a prolific author. His work appeared in numerous publications, including the National Railway Historical Society, the
Prospector, The HOn3 Annual, Colorado Rail Annual No. 9, Tin Feathers & Gasoline Fumes and the 2 books I was privileged to serve as his editor and layout artist,
Three Days & 20 Bucks - The RMRRC's Memorial Day Excursions, and
Rio Grande High-Side Gondolas.
He was a professor of anthropology at both Colorado State and the University of New Mexico. He wrote a number of scholarly papers in his field and the book
Bone Voyage: A Journey in Forensic Anthropology. He also wrote for fun and I received his
Talking Dogs, Singing Mice and other Shaggy Dog Stories in July. He collected what he termed as humorous "unexpected turn" stories. The entire book is pure Stan.
And he was my friend. I will miss his witty, dry humor and his quirky, entertaining emails. I will not miss trying to decipher his tiny, precise (I mean you have to read it with a magnifier!) handwriting on notes and slides.
