An ASTM committee (F24) is currently developing a new standard for inspection and maintenance of steam locomotives that are not regulated by the FRA, especially those at museums and tourist railroads. As many readers of the NGDF have good knowledge of the subject, I am posting the information here so that anyone who might like to be involved and contribute can do so.

Here is the announcement of the work item on the ASTM website (a work item is a document that is under development and intended to become a standard in the future):

1.Scope
1.1This practice prescribes minimum requirements for the inspection and maintenance of steam locomotives. Steam locomotives are described as a self-propelled unit of equipment operating on rails, powered by steam, that is either designed or used for moving other equipment. This includes a self-propelled unit designed or used to carry freight or passenger traffic, or both.
