Steam vs diesel

With all the restorations of steam locomotives that had been stuffed and mounted or set aside as part sources it has made me wonder how much work is it to do a complete rebuild of a vintage diesel locomotive?

The work done to repair/rebuild RGS 20 and D&SNG 493 have been well documented.

If the1203 was to be stripped down from top to bottom and totally rebuilt or say, the two White Pass Alcos headed for Durango received a total rebuild, which would take longer? A steam locomotive or a diesel?

For the sake of discussion, money, parts, and the skills needed are not an issue.

Just curious.
