Back when I lived in Gunnison there was a restaurant on Main St, named "Johnson's" IIRC, that had been there since ca 1900 and still was owned by the original family. It was open for 6-8 weeks every summer and closed the rest of the year.
I also remember hearing about a town where one of the two bars in town closed in September then reopened in mid-December while the other one closed in early January and reopened in May.
Also a motel that would drain the plumbing and turn off the heat in the upper story every fall.
Basically, unless there is a ski resort nearby (which creates a different set of troubles,) most businesses that depend on the tourist trade have about 8-12 weeks to make their profit for the year and just hope not to lose anything, or at least not too much, the rest of the time.
Rough way to make a living.
