Had a fascinating trip over Labor Day. I’ve been given the impression that there’s not much remaining of the narrow gauge line west from Chama. But I plotted a course to Pagosa Junction via Dulce and the Jicarilla Apache Reservation. Just take Narrow Gauge Road (!) out of Dulce. The road follows the San Juan River and there are railroad bridges and some spectacular views. And buildings from the old depot at Pagosa Junction. As usual, it way exceeded my expectations and so I didn’t plan enough time to head north along the line to Pagosa Springs. If anyone has done that route let me know your impressions. Next trip to Chama, i might head up to Pagosa Springs, stay overnight, and then do the full trip to Chama via Pagosa Junction and Dulce.
