Nan Clark, one of the directors of the Friends of the Cumbres and Toltec died after having bypass surgery on 5/4. She is survived by her husband Les Clark.
Nan and Les worked tirelessly to support the railroad at work sessions, with Nan running the lunch car, and Les in the nut and bolt car. They would spend the ENTIRE summer in Chama working all 6 work sessions and Nan would work the train in between sessions as a docent, and Les helping as a handyman around the R/R doing whatever Ed and the shop guys needed done. Nan was on the grant writing committee, and it was because of her hard work that the R/R got tens of thousands in grants from various agencies, and she was just getting warmed up.
I remember a dinner the Friends had up at the Cumbres section house several years ago, with all of us enjoying the beautiful sunset and each others company in that incredible place. There was a short meeting after dinner with Nan thanking Steve Flowers and his staff for the great meal. Frank Turner stood up and in his remarks said that one of the first things he learned when he came to the CATS was that "we all worked for Nan". Nan's sole focus was in supporting the Cumbres and Toltec and she led the way, so how could we say no? Rest in peace, you did good, and we are in your debt. All greens Nan.
