To provide a little contrast to current postings of steam in the snow by Roger and Jerry, here is 2-foot gauge steam in a tropical setting that has never had to deal with snow drifts ...the Wu-tu coal railroad in Taiwan. These photos were taken by my Japanese railfan friend Mineo Kawasaki on his May 1976 trip to Taiwan.
A train of empties heading to the mine behind an 0-4-0T. The luxuriant vegetation made photographing the train a challenge.
The 0-4-0T is returning with a train of loaded coal cars
This photo is captioned Wu-tu coal RR at Yu-nu st. (there are likely different versions of Chinese names converted to latin script).
I would have loved to visit this coal railroad in 1973, but I was not aware of it's existence. But I did visit a number of other narrow gauge sugar cane and coal operations that are yet to be scanned from negatives.
