We rode the Cumbres and Toltec from Chama today, and I can report that I was very impressed with the operation. My only other experience was in 1982. I remember then riding in converted boxcars and sitting on plastic bus waiting room seats. It was really unbearable after about 3 hours.
Today's train ride was organized, efficient, and provided by very friendly staff. The coaches were very comfortable. Lunch at Osier was great. We were served fast. Today's choice was turkey or meatloaf. Turkey is my favorite meal, and this meal was great. My travel mates also gave the meatloaf high marks.
The narration in the gondola was great too. It made the segment from Osier to Sublette really the most interesting part of the trip.
Overall, I would say the C&T is doing a great job, and is offering a product that I would have no hesitation recommending to my non-railfan family and friends.
