The enormous traffic to Silverton is keeping the railroad boys busy night and day now. At least three, sometimes four, double-headers a day go up. The big mines are laying in their winter supply of coal and lumber, and in addition the rush of new machinery for mill buildings there is crowing the railroad, as the Silverton folks are anxious to make as much headway as possible before snow sets in Silverton is sure a busy camp and a dividend-payer for the D. & R.G.

John F. Clarke, formerly of Creede, has accepted the position of conductor on the passenger train of the Silverton Northern railroad, recently vacated by Arthur Hudson who with his family is sojourning for the winter on the coast. Mr. Clarke is an old hand at the business and thoroughly safe and reliable.

Two mule pack trains of 18 animals each are making their daily rounds from Eureka to Animas Forks, Gold Prince and others. [Note: This would indicate that the railroad was out of service, likely account of snow.]
Wednesday afternoon at about 2 o’clock, engine No. 32 on the Silverton, Gladstone and Northerly railroad jumped the track at the Henrietta switch and was badly ditched. Engineer Patsy Fitzsimmons was slightly injured and thanks to his stars that it was no worse with him. The accident was caused from an accumulation of ice on the crossing utilized by a pack train getting ore down from the Henrietta. A wrecking train was sent up from Durango and soon put matters to rights.
