I have just returned from a trip to the L.A. area with my son. He ran in the Foot Locker Nationals. After the race he forced me to go to ride the roller coasters at Knott's Berry Farm.
While there we took a tour of the RR shops, the "Durango", and the "Edna". It was very nice to see the excellent work they have done on the cars and the RGS 41 and D&RGW 340. Although the locomotives shine more than they ever did on the RGS or the Rio Grande the work is museum quality, and the Durango and Edna are magnificant. They are well worth the visit.
The guys who are in charge of the RR are trying to convince the owners to expand the railroad. A good showing (attendance) for their 50th anniversary celebration in January will be seen by the owners as a sign to move ahead.
It occurred to me that they may be doing far more to generate an interest in the narrow gauge among young people (in which lies the long term salvation of all the narrow gauge tourist operations) than one might think. While I don't know the numbers I reckon they have over a million visitors per year. It is seeing steam locomotives operate that generated the passion in most of us while we were kids. These guys could use your support and the equipment is beautiful.
