A brain idle in February comes up with some odd brain cell collisions.
In a snowy year like this one, I'm sure it's virtually certain that some May snow clearing will be required on both the C&TS and the D&S in the upper canyon. While it would be LOVELY to see a rotary run, why abuse those irreplacable machines on what amount to crystaline ice banks for what is an operational need?
Has anyone considered buying a used Sno-Go (or similar) and making a narrow gauge hi-rail out of it? It seems like that would be a pretty straight-forward option with the advantage of not worrying about track damage from a dozer, or burning up a traction motor on a diesel.
As a NNG related thought: One party on the 'extreme' end of this problem is Glacier National Park, with the Going-To-The-Sun highway. They have some pretty amazing videos of clearing the West side along the weeping wall.... in June.
Just throwing the Sno-Go thought out for discussion.

**edit** I had a sudden sinking feeling and googled "sno-go". Yeah, as I suspected. You can tell I went to college in Keeweenaw county. That hasn't been a brand in.... Years. Sno-go will get you a snow bike. Try J.A. Larue, or Oshkosh..... Actually, a Larue unit on an otherwise hi-rail wheel loader frame might be pretty out-of-the-box achievable, and potentially sharable between the two roads.
