South Africa July 1977.
Capetown to Port Elizabeth passenger train climbs the steep mountain grade from George as it heads toward the summit emerging from one of the tunnels that require a bit of a hike. This is a GMAM Garratt (4-8-2+2-8-4)
A few years before this image the SAR decided to run most Garratts coal bunker first, which is actually backwards. I believe steam lasted on this for another couple of years. By 1984 (Second Trip) it was all dieselize.
