Well if the Los Alamos conspiracy
nuts fans were not satisfied by the previous posting of D&RGW MOW reports, perhaps this will.
D&RGW AFE T-9148
December 1941
On account of the steep grade on the Monarch Branch it is necessary to make two turns per train up the hill from Maysville to Monarch. Since there is no wye at Maysville, it is necessary back one way up or down the hill with a train of lime cars. Enginemen are complaining about difficulty encountered in watching tracks and air gauge both while train is backing. Also, the CF&I intends to keep their quarry at Monarch open as long as possible this winter, which will necissitate bucking snow. The snow fighting will be difficult while engine is moving in a backward motion. By constructing a wye at Maysville,l train movement will be speeded uip and an estimated saving of $654 per year can be made.
Cost under-run is due to original estimate being based on using 90# rail and switch material, but since it is desired to install the track immediately, it is proposed to use second hand 65# rail and switch material released from the Santa Fe Branch, and save the delay incident to manafacture of new switch material.
