was looking at the photos of 489 in green that Russo Loco gave links to in another thread. it appears that the shops simply applied the standard pullman green to the boiler jacket.
there always seems to be a certain amount of arguing as to what pullman green was. the museum i voulenteer at has determined to our satisfaction that pullman green is green darkened with brown whitch gives it wonderfull depth and makes it nearly impossible to color match is as brown darkens with age.
however we found a Great Northern painting diagram for the 1951 empire builder that had the dupont paint codes on it and were able to sucsessfully match it to the same color in current industrial paint types and it turns out that the railroads used readily available colors for example the orange in the empire builder paint scheme was GM orange availible on cars and trucks
