J&L 58 - Countdown to Operation!

Jones & Laughlin Steel No. 58, our 24" gauge 0-4-0T "very heavy" Porter is only a few months away from operation. The boiler repair work is now underway and it should be reunited with the frame sometime in March, followed soon after by an initial steam up. Final reassembly should take a couple more months so by June the 58 should be back in full operating condition and ready to run over our currently extremely short section of track at the Youngstown Steel Heritage Museum.
Boiler work included replacement of the lower half of the front tube sheet, replacement of one staybolt, replacement of dome lid studs, repair of the knuckle above the rear tube sheet, repair of nicks in both tube sheets, repair of bottom of smokebox, installation of new smokebox reinforcing plate and installation of new tubes.
