I'm curious how you brake down a long grade with steam power.
I'm familiar with balanced braking on descending grades where you set just the right amount of air for the grade. With a modern maintaining brake valve that's relatively easy - but what about a #6? At some point do you get into cycle braking (set and release and set again)?
One reason I ask is, I recently recalled a mention of a "steam brake" used by the D&RGW. It was characterized as the steam-equivalent of dynamic braking. Anybody heard of such a thing? (Not to be confused with the steam brake on a Shay)
