Howdy All,
With all the interest and good feelings expressed on the Commission Meeting thread regarding 168 and the historic car project, it seemed timely to give an update here. As was stated earlier, the locomotive's boiler and running gear have already been evaluated, the Form 4 engineering package generated, and the condition of the locomotive is very favorable. Since the procurement of funding in May, a great deal has been accomplished. In June, the tender was disassembled and work begun to make the tender frame suitable for service. This included replacing most of the hardware, new kingpins, application of structural welds at all joints, and the addition of bracing and gussets. At the same time, the cab was removed and CAD drawing generated by Jim Booth for the new cab to be constructed by FOCTS this winter. Following this step, work turned to the installation of the new southern yellow pine tender deck, rebuilding of the brake rigging, cylinder, and triple valve. At the same time, the new tender tank was fabricated and will arrive shortly requiring only application of trim, hardware, and rivets. The tender truck rebuild is also well underway with new composite bolsters fabricated, and wheel set removal in process. I would like to thank everyone here at the C&TS for their hard work and dedication to this project, and also all of our benefactors for your generous contributions to bring this historic locomotive back to service. If you find yourself in Antonito, introduce yourself and see the progress!
