463 Boiler in Alabama

January 17, 2010 09:20AM
I just thought that the readers here might like a couple of photos of 463's boiler in Bob Yuill's shop in Steele, AL. I took these on my way home to Texas from Savannah GA., the week before Thanksgiving.

463 is in some pretty significant company. The boiler on the left is from 1744, and the one in the middle is SP 786 from Austin, with 463 on the right. It does give one a perspective of boiler size on two mikes of similar age, but different gauge.

At the time, Bob was waiting to ship 786 off to be reunited with its frame in order to get space to work on 463.

Bob showed me several things that needed to be done on 463, but at that time he had not received a work order, and therefore I don't feel that I should discuss his observations. Suffice it to say that what he will do on 463 will depend on how much C&TS is willing to spend and what result they want when he finishes.
