Hi group,
Santa brought a copy of the hc book "The Rainbow Route", all about the 3 little RR's that went into the mountains above Silverton. I have been interested in these but never knew that much about them -til now.
Great fascinating history and tons of photos of some of the most beautiful spots on earth. Now I really want to go there and see it all in person.
One interesting tidbit in the book relates to the motive power of the lines. Silverton Northern #34, an outside frame 2-8-0 about the size of a C-21, was used by the D&RGW during the year 1922.
To paraphrase a quote in the book:
" The SILVERTON STANDARD, in one of its last issues for 1922, reported on Dec 7 that " S.N. engine #34 was returned during the week by the D.& R.G.W.RR. after use since early in the year ..." The outside frame 2-8-0 with the fancy capped stack, originally purchased by the S.G.& N. was considerably heavier than any of the narrow gauge Consolidations on the big road ... it was of considerable help in handling traffic on the line bewteen Alamosa and Durango, until delivery of the new ALCo class K-28's."
Thats the first I had heard about that, and would love to see any photos showing the SILVERTON NORTHERN 34 at some recognizable locations between Alamosa and Durango!
Great fun!
