Planning a fall trip to review the Argentine Central
and wondered if anyone has been to the entrance of
the Atlantic-Pacific RR Tunnel since it is nearby?
Just curious if the tunnel audit is still visible?
I've been to the Vidler Tunnel above Waldorf which
was once an option to pierce the divide and reach
Dillon & Leadville. A shorter tunnel but needing
the climb from Silver Plume on the Argentine Central.
The Vidler tunnel avoided the grand switchbacks above
Waldorf and went under Argentine Pass.
The Vidler Tunnel is now used for water diversion
from the western slope to the east.
Book comments indicate the Atlantic-Pacific Tunnel
was dug 4000ft on the eastern side and 800ft on the
west according to the person buying it as a mining
claim in the '30's.
A photo of the Atlantic-Pacific entrance appears in
CRRM Annual-10 on page 86.
