I recently acquired this pair of photos of a mishap on the SR&RL involving the big 2-6-2 number 23 and snowplow 512:
There is no date or location recorded on the backs, but the bottom picture is shown by itself on page 143 of volume 2 of
Two Feet Between the Rails with the following caption:
"An axle on the tender broke on Cook's Grade and Number 23 went over the embankment. Engineer Jake Stewart, fireman Carroll Russell and brakeman Andy Aldrich were not injured. [Collection of Andy Aldrich]"
So they're apparently Andy Aldrich's photos, and Andy was there, but this explanation doesn't look right to me when the two photos are considered together.
Doesn't it look like the plow derailed (maybe on a patch of ice) and then spun around 180 degrees, and then the tender rode up on the plow?
Or maybe a combination of the two stories: the tender axle broke, tender and engine derailed, the plow derailed and spun around 180 degrees, and then the tender rode up on the plow?
What do others think?
