D&RGW pipe trains

October 11, 2001 09:41AM
As we all know the Farmington oil rush was a contributing factor in keeping the narrow gauge alive in the '50s and '60s. I've seen lots of video of the pipe trains snaking along the Rockies on their way to Chama and Durango.
Does anyone have any information on how the pipe was unloaded once it got to Farmington, especially on the trains with the idler flats? Did they shove the cars on a siding and take it off from the side, or did they place them on a stub and pull them off from the end?
