March 2, 1894 Pagosa Spring News
President Jeffery of the D. & R.G., S. H. Moffat and Otto Mears have undertaken to open up some copper mines in Northern New Mexico. The news comes from Embudo, Taos county, NM, that these gentlemen have purchased from Orson Bros., a group of copper mines for $11,500. Five more claims were bonded for $70,000. Contracts have been let for the erection of houses to accommodate 100 men and for hauling the ore to Embudo station on the Espanola branch of the D. & R.G., the nearest station to the mines. The ore runs about $100 to the ton, 45 per cent of which is copper, and it is a fluxing ore such as can be melted readily in the Standard smelter at Durango, in which Mr. Mears is invested.
