Hi,
With lots of discussion recently of War Birds and history and WWII, I'd like to thank those predecessors of ours for the next turnting point battle of WWII.
July 31, B17s started a weeks worth of bombing leading up to the invasion (Aug 7) of Guadalcannal. It took until December 1942 to secure the island.
The significant navel battles preceeding this were Coral Sea (first time the US stopped the Japanese cold) and Midway (a decisive Navel Battle)but both were defensive in nature tothe US. Guadalcannal was the first Offensive strike (taking away territory from the Japanese).
I usually think of Guadalcannal as the equivelent of Operation Torch in Eurpoe.
Thanks to the Greatest Generation.
