Leaving Alamosa after retirement

November 13, 2013 04:51PM
Several Rio Grande train and engine crew members left Alamosa after their last runs. This may be a hunch but I don't think they liked the winters.
Engineer Alexander H. Baskett moved to San Diego, CA., where he died in 1964. Baskett was a regular on the Chili Line on D.H. Hines' crew, one of two crews that worked the Chili Line. After the Chili Line was torn up Baskett used his seniority to run the San Juan.
Another Chili Line veteran O.J. (Omar Justin) Timmons moved to Little River, Kansas. Timmons died on 2-26-1964, his 84th birthday.
Engineer Claude (Claudius Wilbur) Allbee (6-23-1876= 4-2-1969) moved to Florence, CO. However after he died his body was brought back for burial in Monte Vista. Allbee ran trains over all the lines out of Alamosa including the Chili Line.
