While narrow gauge engineers gained standard gauge senior in 1936 in Salida, John Berton ``Burt'' Shewalter (4-13-1878=2-1960) went the other way. Shewalter went to work at the creosote plant running 24-inch gauge Porter No. 40. J.B. Shewalter was one slot below O.E. Shewalter (Brothers maybe?) on the narrow gauge board. Orvie E. Shewalter was born on 2-15-1974 and died on 3-24-1962. We was the senior engineer on the Salida narrow gauge in the late 1930s, running the Shavano between Salida and Gunnison on alternating days.
