Another engineer in the twilight of the D&RGW narroww gauge was Lee Otteson. Otteson fired for Steve Connor on the last D&RGW passenger train over Cumbres Pass in November 1968, the National Park Service Special.
A couple weeks later he operated the 473 on the last D&RGW westbound train over Cumbres Pass. He was not needed on the eastbound trip because only the 483 was used and Carl Jack had seniority on him.
Andy Payne took the 473 on to Durango. It was the last time a K-28 was used anywhere but the Durango-Silverton line.
Otteson also has seniority over Andy and was one of the last engineers to run the Silverton train before it was sold.
Otteson entered the engine service on 9-21-1954.
