NNG "strange and unique" sand dome

July 25, 2009 09:04AM

Visiting Coos Bay, 60 miles north of here, I noticed that Oregon Coast Historical Railway's museum was open, so I finally got to see their displays, which are at the south end of town, next to the northbound side of highway 101 (it's one way here). They have the area well fenced, and nice displays inside, including Coos Bay Lumber #104, a 1922 Baldwin 2-8-2. There's even a set of stairs up to the cab, so kids can ring the bell!

Driving by, I always assumed the thing behind the stack was a spark arrester, awaiting a crane to lift it onto the stack, but no....., it's a homemade, large capacity sand dome!
