On a previous thread we were talking about engines (specifically the #191) not being able to being restored to operation because of "outlawed" wrought iron boilers. This, of course was because of a stricter code enacted by the I.C.C. in 1912. This resulted in all of the remaining D&RG class 60 (c-16) & Class 70 (c-19) to be reboilered at this time. The class 56's were largely disposed of at this time and were not included.
Now, where I'm going with this is that I know of at least 2 class 56 engines that operated after this code was enacted. Silverton Northern #1 operated until about 1920, and Silverton Northern #33 (ex-Silverton, Gladstone, & Northerly #33) operated as late as 1917. How did they get away with it?
1. Were they re-boilered? (unlikely)
2. Did the SN get a special exemption? (possibly)
3. Did they fire them up hoping the I.C.C wouldn't notice? (quite possibly)
What are your thoughts?
