B&W photos now vs yesteryear

All,

I was just curious what people thought of modern day b&w photos of trains taken with today's digital cameras versus the b&w photos of yesteryear?

Do people feel you can get the same effect now as was then? Sometimes b&w photos of today don't have that same gritty feel as older photos of trains do.

Just curious...all input welcome
