As could naturally be expected, work down at the yard has been somewhat slowed by the winter conditions, but progress is still being made. Just as last season, our wood-burning Heisler number 3 will be handling the passenger trains while Mikado number 19 is undergoing its fifteen-year overhaul. In regard to the number 9, good progress has been made, with the majority of the disassembly now complete. After the boiler is cleaned and ultrasound tested, the firebox repairs can commence. At this time we are optimistic that the big oil-burner will be back in service for the 2012 season.
Our other mainline locomotive currently under repair is diesel-electric number 720, which is nearing the end of its overhaul. Work remains to be done on the wheelsets and traction motors, but the list of remaining tasks to return the locomotive to full service is running short. When completed, this locomotive will be a valuable addition to the fleet for backup and track work, as well as being able to keep the trains running if the steam locomotives are sidelined due to fire danger.
Work is also underway on the facilities and rolling stock. The Backshop received a brand new lighting system; the Restoration Shop has gotten new doors and windows, as well as a new façade. Before the trains begin running, the McEwen depot will be getting a concrete deck, as well as a new loading ramp for passengers. In regard to rolling stock, work is underway on Sumpter Valley Railway boxcar number 1353, which was homebuilt in South Baker in 1917. This car was recovered from a back yard in Baker City last summer, and while stabilization work is the current priority, it is hoped that the car can eventually be returned to service. Other cars under repair include Denver & Rio Grande Western outfit sleeper number 04951, Westside Lumber Company coffin tank number 5, and Westside Lumber Company caboose number 3.
Last year the railroad increased its passenger counts by 10%, and we are planning on accomplishing that goal again this season. If you would like to assist with advertising, the 2011 brochures are ready for distribution, please contact the Baker County Visitors Bureau at 800-523-1235 if you need some.
The Safety Weekends this year will be held on May 14/15 and 21/22, and are a required attendance for anyone who will be working with the operating departments this coming season. These refresher courses are actually quite enjoyable, and while there is some classroom work required, for the most part the training is hands-on. Lunch and continental breakfast is also provided.
