NNG - Darwin and the (Iron) Dinosaurs

March 04, 2009 07:37PM avatar
For several years, I have used fellow AFT volunteer Larry Wines' definition of Steam Locomotives as "Iron Dinosaurs", so I wasn't too surprised at the following tongue-in-cheek sidebar, which appeared on page 70 of Scientific American's special issue honoring the 200th anniversary of the birth of one of the most astute and influential scientists of all time - Charles Darwin.

"[NASA scientist Peter Ward] and his 11-year-old son recently built a reconstruction of the late Cretaceous world on a large model-train layout, replete with dinosaurs to scale, and can now attest that the extinction of the dinosaurs was caused by speeding locomotives." tongue sticking out smiley
