Interestingly, I was going through John Norwood's book, "Rio Grande Narrow Gauge", when I found something very intriging. On pages 166 & 167 there is a 1923 roster of narrow gauge locomotives. There is a lising of 2 2-8-0s numbered 554 & 555 class 71 built by Baldwin in 1884 & 7-1890 respectfully. I didn't know that there were any D&RG narrow gauge locos numbered in the 500 series. The 1940 roster of all steam locomotives later in the book show no metion of these engines.
Their specs are as follows:
1. 37" drivers-only other engines that had these were the Grant built 60 series (C-16)
2. 16x20 cylinders- used in the 70 & 72 series (C-17, C-18, & C-19)
3. Weight on drivers: 62,900 lbs which put them in between the C-17 and the C-18 & 19 locos.
Can someone elaborate on these engines and can anyone post some photos?
Thanx,
Donald Foster
