1881 October whistle signals

September 16, 2008 05:16PM
Hi,

About a year or so ago, there was a discussion about whistle signals. I found my copy of the pre-standardization (is that a legal word?) of the whistle signals.

It is about 4.5 MEG long and in four separate files in a single zip file. If you would like a copy, feel free to download it at:
[jennycat.home.mindspring.com] "xlii 1881.zip"

This chart was in the October 1881 Official Guide and there was discussion about standardizing the signals.

At the time, no railroad listed used the long-long-short-long for grade crossings.

Also notice that the one toot for forward and two for reverse was used by some railroads and some used two long for forward and one for reverse!

For what its worth.
